Chang was born in Houli, a small town in central Taiwan. Unlike most people at that time who chose agriculture as their profession, Chang had a deep and special interest in music, painting, and other branches of art. In 1945, Chang and two of his friends, who were all greatly interested in music, organized a band called “JAZZ BAND”.

Their performance throughout Taiwan was widely acclaimed until, one day, a great fire occurred, in which the only saxophone of the band was so seriously damaged that it could not be played any longer. A dedicated painter as well as a musician, Chang decided to endow the destroyed saxophone a new life. He began by making an accurate drawing of the saxophone, which contained about four hundred components, and was a hard task to be accomplished. With dedication, he started to transform the drawing into a real saxophone. After three and a half years, the first hand-made saxophone in Taiwan was finally constructed. Due to its excellent quality and heavenly sounds, people allover Taiwan began to be captivated by the instrument, and thus began the miraculous rise of the saxophone
